Exploring the Intersection of Conservation and Community with Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda (GESG).

Our recent trip to the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve was nothing short of inspiring. Led by Alexander Watson and Léa Smadja, we had the incredible opportunity to immerse ourselves in the rich biodiversity and innovative conservation work spearheaded by Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda I.A.P. This field trip allowed us to witness firsthand how this unique region is at the forefront of carbon sequestration efforts, demonstrating the powerful potential of community-led environmental stewardship.

Arrival at Jalpan de la Sierra, Pueblo Magico

The journey began with the arrival at Jalpan de la Sierra, where OpenForests team were introduced to the region’s rich cultural and environmental heritage. The first stop was the Centro Tierra, a hub for ecological education and innovation. Here, we met with Marco del Prete, the Secretary of Sustainable Development (SEDESU), and Ricardo Torres, a key figure in SEDESU’s environmental initiatives. Their discussions centered on the critical role of sustainable development in balancing economic growth with environmental preservation. This initial meeting set the stage for the days ahead, highlighting the strong government support for the region’s conservation efforts.

Celebrating the Guardians of the Forests

On Sunday, August 11th, 2024, we were fortunate to attend a special event celebrating the beneficiaries of the carbon sequestration program supported by Sello Querétaro. More than 50 local landowners were honored for their vital role in conserving the environment, with each receiving a symbolic payment from the state of Querétaro. This event, attended by notable figures such as Marco del Prete, Secretary of Sustainable Development, Ricardo Torres, Undersecretary of the Environment, and Alexander Watson, CEO of OpenForests, alongside Martha Isabel “Pati” Ruiz Corzo, Director of Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda, emphasized the collaborative efforts between local communities, the state government, and environmental organizations to advance sustainable practices and protect Sierra Gorda’s ecosystems

Hands-On Learning in the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve

Our journey took us deep into the mountain cloud forests of Sierra Gorda, where we had the opportunity to engage in a hands-on field exercise. We visited Rancho Suelo Vivo, a forest restoration site, and participated in monitoring carbon capture. The experience of walking through these lush forests with local naturalists was a profound reminder of the tangible impact that effective conservation practices can have on both the environment and the local economy.

The following map allows us to explore the project location in detail. Satellite time series and thematic data layers with forest loss detection, land-use change, etc. are available to follow the impact.

Uniting Conservation and Community

What struck us most during our time in Sierra Gorda was the holistic approach taken by the Grupo Ecologico Sierra Gorda. This model combines carbon sequestration with biodiversity conservation and community development, creating a regenerative economy that benefits both the land and the people. Local communities are actively involved in protecting their forests while generating income through the sale of carbon credits under internationally recognized standards.

Looking Forward: A Collective Effort for a Sustainable Future

Our field trip to the Sierra Gorda reinforced our belief that the key to effective conservation lies in collaboration and community empowerment. By working closely with local stewards, leveraging carbon finance, and promoting sustainable land-use practices, the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve is setting an example for regions across the globe.

At OpenForests, we are committed to continuing our support for these efforts by developing technologies and frameworks that further enhance forest conservation and regeneration. Together with the passionate conservationists of Sierra Gorda, we look forward to building a future where biodiversity, climate action, and community well-being are at the heart of our shared vision for sustainability.
